The dot collection examines a dotted mesh pattern found in some of the small buildings around the coast in the Scottish Highlands. The surfaces have been weathered by years of rain and wind and have a lovely softened quality. The regularity of the pattern has been disrupted, and in some places completed obliterated.
Although the original inspiration is a manmade surface, the finished printed silk is also reminiscent of the natural surfaces found around the coast near my studio. The colours suggest the aqua of the sea, the blue of the sky, and the copper tones of the heathery ground.
Screenprint is one of my favourite techniques to use as it allows softening of harsh edges and a real fluidity to the finished design. I hand dye the silk before individually screenprinting each accessory. Working on the silk as if it were a canvas, I create one-off printed designs based around the core dot theme. Each piece of wearable art can be tied/wrapped to show off the printed detail in a variety of ways.
