All of my bow ties are the proper, tricky kind you have to tie yourself. But don’t worry – here’s a step by step guide of how to tie your bow tie.
One
Hold both ends of the bow tie out straight and pull one end so it is a couple of inches longer than the other. Fold the long end in front of the short end and tuck the longer end up and under so that a simple knot is formed.
Two
Fold the short end into the normal bow tie shape, and position it over the first knot you made.
Three
Drop the long end vertically over (in front of) your newly formed bow.
Four
The tricky part!
Pass the folded end under and behind the left side of the knot. It’s easier if you pinch the front bow and hold it away from the knot – a small hole appears that you can feed the folded end.
Five
Tighten the knot you have created, straightening any crumples and creases.
Six
Admire your bow tie in the mirror. Congratulations, you’ve tied it your way!
Did you know your bow tie is fully reversible?
Once you’ve got the hang of tying it, why not try turning it over and tying it the opposite way round for a totally new look. Just feed the bow tie end in through the D-rings the opposite way round to keep your bow tie nice and tidy at the back, then tie it the exact same way.
